Vatican Lays Claim to Staffordshire Hoard?!?

Well, apparently the Vatican has been reading the Hawass playbook because they are making a claim to the Staffordshire Hoard.

The BirminghamMailNews writes:

[T]he awe-inspiring Staffordshire Hoard, one of the most important discoveries of Anglo-Saxon treasure in British history, may be whisked away by the Vatican.

That is the fear of experts who believe the haul of 1,500 artefacts, made of gold and silver and decorated with precious stones, could be the lost treasure of King Edwin, a seventh century Christian monarch.

The claim being that good King Edwin received some bling from the Pope. (Note the Italian design of the above piece.) Pathetic really.

note: this is a sort of inside joke. The Vatican is merely trying to buy the hoard.
